Rakuten: $40 Welcome Bonus Promo (Easy Money)

I’m a big fan of free/easy money promotions, as I’m sure you are too, and this is a good one from the Rakuten shopping portal in advance of the holidays (for a limited time only).

Rakuten (formerly “Ebates”), is offering up a $40 welcome bonus to new users who join and then make $40+ in purchases by using the Rakuten site/app/extension to initiate a purchase at any of the thousands of retailers Rakuten partners with (e.g. eBay, Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, etc.). This is the largest welcome bonus promotion I have seen from Rakuten (it’s typically $10 or occasionally $25).

To get the $40 welcome bonus, simply:

  1. Become a new member (for free) using this Rakuten referral link. I’d suggest doing so as soon as you read this, as this is a “limited time” promotion and could end at any moment.
  2. Start at Rakuten and find the retailer(s) you were going to make purchases from anyways (purchases must total $40+ within 90 days of becoming a member), and click the referral links at Rakuten to go to the retailer’s site to make a purchase.

After making the $40 in purchases, you’ll get the welcome bonus deposited into your account. You can then withdraw/transfer the bonus (I opted for the check option, but you can also opt for payment by PayPal).

The welcome bonus is stacked on top of any other promotions you find through the site (a number of retailers come with significant cash back rewards, such as 5%, 10% or more, in addition to other discount/promo codes).

How can Rakuten afford to do this? They have advertising agreements with these retailers and get a small commission from the retailer for any purchases that were referred from Rakuten.

Note: I don’t have any advertising or other relationship with Rakuten, I’m simply a user who wanted to pass along this promo to my readers! Might as well get additional cash back for necessary purchases. Gonna go share this one with Mrs. 20SF right now. Enjoy!
