Given this jobs economy I find ir mind boggling that people really believe the unemployed are the weakest links in companies. I find it almost treasonist that companies would treat their fellow Americans this way. I'd like to see a list so I can boycott them all. Companies are taking advantage of the economy by letting go their longer tenured ie: most experienced & highest paid in trade for lower paid workers. I just came out of a Fortune 50 cellular company that is doing exactly this. They let go everyone over 12 yrs tenure. We were their SMARTEST & BRIGHTEST employees, not the dumbest. We built that company to the monster it is today and it wasnt easy. Slackers simply dont make it at this company & I pray for those poor ( cheap) souls that are taking our places. Thye will be eaten alive! I have been in my field for over 20 yrs. I am highly skilled & certainly did not go into a coma and forget everything while I was unemployed. I am currently working on starting my own business. I am way over qualified for most jobs I see out there and unfortunately unemployment pays more than most of the paltry salary offerings I see being offered but I would take one anyway. And based on most of the 'workers' I've had the chance to encounter, these companies are passing over the cream of the crop for people who can barely communicate & have the brain skills of a monkey in most cases...sorry but true. But alas, these are the preferential picks. Why ?? Because they're cheaper. ALL employees go once they hit certain threshholds withing a company. That includes everybody. Now is a great time to pick up some excellent cheap help, but my mind befuddles me as to why more companies are not taking advantage of the huge pool of experienced & talented help that is in abundance out there. I certainly would be if I were an employer ! But does anything make sense in this world anymore ? It's proving to be run by a pack of idiots lately !

Brandy - given this jobs economy do you really think the unemployed are the weakest links ? Wrong, companies are taking advantage of this & letting go their longer tenured ie: most experienced & highest paid in trade for lower paid workers. I just came out of a Fortune 50 cellular company that is doing this. Let go everyone over 12 yrs tenure. We were their SMARTEST & BRIGHTEST employees, not the dumbest. We built that company to the monster it is today and it wasnt easy. Slackers simply dont make it at this comapny. Please do not follow the garbage trail beliefs that you hear & use your common sense. Compared to the 'workers' I've had the chance to encounter, these companies are passing over the cream of the crop for people who can barely communicate & have the brain skills of a monkey in most cases...sorry but true. But alas, these are the preferential picks. Why ?? Because they're cheaper. ALL employees go once they hit certain threshholds withing a company. And companies are in business to make profits at any cost. Now is a great time to pick up some excellent cheap help, but my mind befuddles me as to why more companies are not taking advantage of this.

SUBJECT: I Apologize for typo (going to *be* achieved)

I am so utterly sick of the crappy, low class, asinine way companies are thinking nowadays. do us all a favor and stop sticking your head so far up your butt you can’t see straight; oh yeah, and GET OVER YOURSELF!!!! Our founding fathers are turning in their graves! They would’ve NEVER approved of such unethical behavior. I thought the U.S. as well as all other countries experiencing the economic financial crisis wanted to improve the lives of their citizens; so how in the world is that going to be achieved if companies continue to disregard unemployed individuals? Don’t they ever stop and think that hiring someone already employed as opposed to someone who isn’t doesn’t always guarantee a job well done in the end? IDIOTS!!!!

That kind of policy is totally unfair. Employers can't just turn unemployed applicants away without even giving them a chance. ALL qualified applicants deserve the exact same amount of consideration for the job they're applying for. For all employers know, an unemployed person could be the best employee out there, which can't be known for sure if said person doesn't even get one chance. Being unemployed doesn't keep talented people from becoming famous, so why should it keep them from getting noticed in any other way?!

Thanks for clarifying! There are a lot of people out of work due to the fact that the company they worked for was experience the effects of the economy and it had nothing to do with their performance. I watched my former employer go through the difficult task of scaling back the staff and she never wanted to let one of them go, but had no choice in the matter - it was what was needed to keep the business alive.

@Brandy, please don't say that the "weakest links" are eliminated. That's STUPID and NOT TRUE! My mom's boyfriend (he is african-american by the way) is an engineer, and for YEARS they used this man's ideas, thoughts..he was the first one in the door and the last one to leave out....he came up with ALL the company's projects and designed all of their projects...they USED him, and tossed him to the side without even as much as pay...he could only file for unemployment, which was a little of nothing. Then, they REHIRED a kid fresh out of college who was willing to work for less. So please, don't tell me that companies fire the 'weak link'. It is also noted that most minorities (in particular blacks) get the Axe FIRST!

and there are some violations being broken here by these companies. Just look at the damn numbers will you!16% of unemployed blacks??!! That is ridiculous!!!!! That alone should be illegal. I for one have been looking for a job for over 2 years before finally giving up and starting my own business...I also have a CNA certificate, and they wouldn't even hire me for THAT, mind you, i live in Texas (one of the most racist states on the planet)......when did it become that a CNA doesn't find work??!!!

There is a DIRECT attack on minorities...any person can see that by just looking at the numbers. Statistics also show that employers are more willing to hire a white person with a CRIMINAL RECORD before hiring a black without a criminal record...the USA SUCKS! I'm moving to Italy.

The graciousness of your comments do your arguments no credit (or perhaps it does them exactly the right amount of credit).

As for knowing "who you really are", I am quite confused that you seem to think I have an ex-wife, or indeed that I have ever been married -- I'm exactly who I claim to be here.

Those who unthinkingly consider this discrimination of the most invidious sort would do well to read the article on discrimination from the Library of Economics and Liberty. It seems to me that here, the discrimination is the kind based on productivity, not the kind based on prejudice. The employers here simply lack information about individuals. As with the concessionaire example in that article, employers believe they can't cost-effectively distinguish between effective and ineffective currently-unemployed workers, so they make a blunt shorthand decision to attempt to compensate.

Of course maybe only a "loser" or a "moron" would think this, and it's certainly possible the economist who wrote that article is one as well. Nevertheless, I'm inclined to give the views of experts greater attention than I give the views of agitated blog commenters.

These companies are dumb. It's going to force people to lie on their resumes. Now they and recruiters will have to hire people to sift through a new layer bureaucracy; because they called to talk to someone's previous employer but it was actually one of the job applicant's friends!!!!!! LOL what a bunch of idiots. This is definitely un American.

I do feel bad for unemploy people because in my opinion, do not deserve it. The only people that deserve to get booted off of being an employee is if they do unethical practice for a company. For example, someone who stole millions of dollars of merchandise from a company that they work for or someone who mismanage their customers or clients funds like one lady did where she ended up getting caught. Unfortunately, she was a ING Direct rep in Kirkland, WA.

Siestagator and Rachel, thank god there are more people like you. Forget morons like Jeff and Rachel. They obviously do not have any brain cells to know why companies lay people off. I guess with all of the partying that they both do, their brain cells dwindle down to nothing. We always have pessimistic folks who are in essence, are dissatisfied with themselves.
