Best Personal Finance Blog Posts & Other Oddities – Week of 4-25-10

Submitted by G.E. Miller on Friday, 30 April 2010One Comment

I will begin giving some love to my favorite blogs in a weekly post. Most will be along the lines of the topics I discuss here for young professionals, but I might sprinkle in a few oddities and other interesting things as well. ;-)

In personal news, I received my tax refund (just two weeks after submitting it – yes, I was lazy this year). I promptly EFT’d the money over to my Zecco discount brokerage account. Here’s what I liked around the blogosphere and beyond this week:

10 Awesome Companies Built by Teens (Wisebread) – Wisebread highlights some amazing entrepreneurial teen geniuses and how they got started. Pretty motivational if you’ve been putting off your business ideas. Warning: you will most likely feel old reading this.

How to Avoid Tipping Scams (Bargaineering) – Jim over at Bargaineering gives some great tips on how to avoid getting scammed when signing a receipt with a tip. Some things I have definitely never thought of before but will be using.

What you Need to Know Before Co-Signing a Loan (GenxFinance) – Jeremy highlights the repercussions of co-signing on a loan where the co-signer doesn’t pay up and how it could impact your credit score and more.

The Coming Melt Down in Higher Education (Seth Godin’s Blog) – Seth’s views on secondary education, graduate degrees in particular, is almost identical to mine (he has an MBA and he still thinks they are a rip off). He raises some exceptional points and discusses the merits of a liberal education.

Ford Reports $2+ Billion in Profit in Q1 (Daily Metro News) – Exciting news for American automakers, Detroit, and the State of Michigan.

Comcast Wants Me to Return Modem they Never Owned (Consumerist) – Another fun Comcast screw the customer story. I’m calling them to ask them to lower my bills again today.

Your Facebook Status Update Could Get you Rejected from Harvard (Consumerism Commentary) – Flexo reminds us all to clean up our social media profiles, especially when applying for something.

Free Dating Site Communication (Chemistry.com) – For all you 20somethingfinance.com singles, hit the online dating scene for free this Friday through Sunday at Chemistry.com.

Have a fabulous weekend!
